5 Tips for a Successful Documentary-Style Family Photography Session

If you've ever looked back at an old photo and remembered the feeling of that moment more than the way your hair looked or what you were wearing, then you're already in the spirit of documentary-style family photography.

This type of session isn’t about coordinating outfits or smiling for the camera. It’s about storytelling—real, unscripted moments that reflect your family’s true personality and connection. As a lifestyle and documentary photographer, I’ve found that the most meaningful images come when everyone feels free to just be themselves.

Here are five simple tips to help you get the most out of your documentary-style family photo session:

1. Let Go of “Perfect”

Perfection is overrated. In fact, it’s the messy, funny, honest moments that tend to be the most beautiful. If your toddler throws a tantrum, your dog won’t sit still, or someone spills juice on the floor—embrace it. These are the moments that tell the truth about your family life right now, and that’s what we want to capture.

Instead of aiming for a flawless performance, focus on being present with your people. That’s where the magic happens.

2. Choose a Meaningful Activity

One of the best ways to make your session feel natural is to plan around something you already love doing as a family. Think pancake breakfast, playing in the backyard, bedtime stories, or even jumping in puddles after a Florida rainstorm. When everyone is focused on doing something familiar and fun, they forget the camera is even there—and that’s when the real moments happen.

Bonus tip: Pick something your kids enjoy. When they’re happy and engaged, the energy of the session completely shifts—in the best way.

3. Don’t Stress About Your House

If your session is at home, don’t feel like it has to look like it came out of a magazine. You live there—it’s supposed to look lived in. I’m not photographing your house; I’m photographing your family in your home.

That said, if you’re feeling self-conscious, pick one or two well-lit rooms to tidy up just a little. Open the blinds, fluff a few pillows, and call it good. No deep cleaning required.

4. Ignore the Camera (Seriously)

I know it can feel awkward at first, but the more you can let yourself forget that I’m there, the better your photos will feel. My role during documentary sessions is to observe and capture—not to direct every moment.

Think of me more like a friend hanging out with a camera. I’ll give gentle guidance if needed, but I’m mainly there to document the natural flow of your day—the laughter, the quiet moments, and everything in between.

5. Trust the Process

This might not feel like any other photo session you’ve had before—and that’s a good thing. It might feel a little strange to not be posing or smiling directly at the camera. But documentary photography is about capturing how your life feels, not just how it looks.

Some of the most meaningful images come from what seem like small moments: the way your child reaches for your hand, the way you brush hair out of their eyes, the way your family piles onto the couch for a story. These are the photos that grow in value over time.

Documentary-style sessions are about you—not the polished, posed version, but the real-life, everyday, beautiful version. That’s the one your family will want to remember. And that’s the story I’m here to tell.
